It didn’t take me long to decide what to focus my efforts on during Orktober. Hobby time is limited at the moment, but I hope to be able to complete my Blood Axe Warboss’ retinue of 5 Nobz and attendants.
First to join the household is this decidedly Blood Axe looking Boss, who actually predates the arrival of the Ork Clans. With a sword befitting an officer and some very fancy techno gubbinz on his back, he’s clearly of elevated rank. Alongside him cowers a lowly Gretchin weapons bearer who carries the Warboss’ favourite boltgun and ammo.
Time fer a break
Carryin’ tha burden of responsibility
One of the many gradually growing armies in my collection are the Dark Elves for Warhammer 3rd Edition. I have the majority of the infantry finished (I am aiming for a modest 1500 points), but was still lacking leadership.
I decided on the Champion from Mengil Manhide’s Regiment of Renown as a level 15 Death Dealer, since I always liked the bird of prey he is carrying.
You don’t have to be superstitious to know that this owl brings bad tidings
To provide contrast to the largely black troopers in the army and in keeping with my overall colour scheme, I chose the Naggarothi Snowy Owl as the general’s hunting bird.
Oh really, your name is Ean Hawklord?
Terror is a powerful weapon in the arsenal of the Dark Elf raiders
I also replaced the leader of one of my crossbow units, since ironically he had been one of the few Dark Elf figures without a crossbow on him. Now a suitably armed warrior has taken over his duties.
Fire at my command!
I haven’t worked on my Oldhammer Dark Elf army since the start of the year, so it was time for an update. Rather than committing myself to another unit, I finished two of the three character models that I have in the list – an Assassin and a Sorcerer.
Cold steel and dark magic are a fearsome combination
I kept the paint jobs simple and dark as usual, with the only divergence from the standard colours being some bronze on the Sorcerer and a verdigris wash on his magical amulet. I particularly like the stances of these two that fit their professions very well.
Death-hood – level 15 Sorcerer
Goredirker – level 10 Assassin
With their targets eliminated, the deadly duo turn away to choose new victims
Ever since I painted the first two mummies for my Warhammer 3rd Edition Undead army I haven’t been able to rest easy. Knowing there were two more ancient sculpts out there to complete the set, I undertook several gruelling expeditions until they were finally discovered and bound to my necromantic forces.
They are coming to get you
The shambling dead
Now four strong, these powerful undead can bring doom to entire regiments of enemies. If they weren’t so slow.
The first Oddboy to join my Warhammer 40k Rogue trader style Blood Axe warband is a Mek with accompanying Gretchin attendant. I’ve had this Mekboy figure for a long time, and previously included him as part of a modern style Burna Boyz unit, which was never completed. Now that he has set up shop for himself, I completed his paint job and gave him a little helper too.
The Mekboy is cranking up his latest creation
I think these guys make a great duo, and I am planning to have more Gretchin attendants throughout the tribe. The backdrop for the photos is a 4Ground adobe building, which is a great fit for the Ork architecture we used to see in 90s White Dwarfs and Codex books.
Health & Safety first
Proudly carrying the tool of the trade
His backplate links the Mekboy to the Warboss’ household
I’ve reached my target of 20 Gretchin for an old school Space Ork force. These can well be used as part of a clan list or as Gretchin Bandits. Since I also recently bought Rogue Stars, I could pick a pirate gang from them.
Gretchin swarming through a derelict space craft
The final additions are one proper old lead figure and one 2nd edition plastic Gretchin. I had the box set and used these guys regularly since I didn’t own any metal sculpts in the day, but this is probably the first one I actually completely painted.
These diminutive pirates are the curse of merchant shipping across the sector
Next I’ll be painting a squad of da boyz and a retinue for the Warboss.
