The final element in my Oldhammer Dark Elves force is a Jabberwock, summoned to do evil deeds by the sorceries of the Death-hood.
It’s a quirky sculpt of a weird monster that I’ve always liked, so I am glad to have found a place for it amongst my armies. I thought the traditional colour scheme would make a good fit for my Dark Elves. Their habit of fielding bound monsters to bolster their ranks is something I gladly subscribed to as well, since the Jabberwock is the points equivalent of another regiment of infantry or cavalry.

That’s lovely, and who could possibly turn down the option of a jabberwock in a project like this.
I really like the wrinkled hide.

Thank you. It’s a match made in heaven indeed (and by heaven I mean the hellish dungeons of Clar Karond of course).
The sculpt is really well defined and lent itself to my painting style, i.e. lack of colour blending patience/skills. It was easy to follow the contours of the folds and apply a few successive shades of lightening green.

Smart painting for purpose is not something to make excuses for.
It’s a fantastic army.

That is really nice! I’ve never seen that model before! Like the sculpt, like the colours, like the base etc. Really nice!

Thank you! I am glad we share this weird definition of nice :)

That’s cool. Love the green and purple combination as well. Works very well.

Thanks, it’s a combination I’ve enjoyed since Poly the Wyvern, and for this force it just made sense.

It’s a weird-looking, and rather endearing, beast right enough. Strange to see a monster that’s so small, these days it would be the size of a house! Great work, it fits in nicely alongside your evil elves.

Cheers, it is a strange monster in every respect, with poisoned attacks, regeneration, stupidity… It is only causing fear rather than terror, though I’d still rather not meet it down a dark swamp at night.

Nicely done mate – the perfect accompaniment for any self-respecting DE force!

Thanks! Not sure what I let myself in for, rolls for stupidity were never my forte.

Really nice work on the Jabberwock. I always wanted the old Ral Partha Tom Meier version (http://www.miniatures-workshop.com/lostminiswiki/index.php?title=Image:RP-01-095.jpg) – this a nice one. Great work on the wings and the horns and claws.

Thank you! I have that sculpt too, but haven’t decided yet whether to paint it in the same scheme or differently. Since they are described as coming in all sorts of vibrant colours in WHFB, I might postpone painting until I decided which force it will be attached to.
I bought mine from Ral Partha Europe, in the States it is still produced by Iron Wind: https://store.ironwindmetals.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=8095&osCsid=gmshfoi7ef6k76o79jcltl7eo1

Snazzy, and it even matches the elves too, which I think they’d probably appreciate and find important!

Cheers! Nobody is quite sure if they choose their livery to match the monsters they drive into battle or capture the monsters to match their colours. And everybody knows better than to ask.

That’s true, I certainly wouldn’t ask! I wonder if it is both, as well as some hideous procedures that are so, well … hideous it would blast your mind even to learn a hint of them!

There are whispers of insane interdimensional titans enslaved via dark magicks using diabolical tinctures to colour the creatures of chaos in mind bending shades to please their masters. But it is just madmen who would believe such things.

Yes, I’d put that sort of madness right up there with the idea that our fates are controlled by chance and rolls of the dice rather than by our own agency, free will, and the actions we take!
I mean, who even believes in “Chaos,” right? :)

I like the colour scheme you used for the Citadel Jabberwock, a miniature I had never seen before until I saw yours. It inspired me to buy one via eBay which of course had to have the old paint job stripped off. Unfortunately the wings were broken in two, I have glued them back together, but it is a bit fragile. The nub on the underside of the wings on the one one I have does not seem deep enough to make contact with bottom the crevice in the beasts back so there are not a lot of contact points to glue. Did you pin the wings or use epoxy to attach them more securely and in fill the extra space in the crevice? When you painted it did you paint the wings and creature separately before gluing them together?

Glad you enjoyed it and got your own. Ral Partha also do one that is still available from their store. As far as I remember the wings fit tightly for mine and I didn’t use any pinning or filler, just superglue. I painted the figure once glued together. If your wings are not a good fit, I would pin them and use some green stuff or similar putty to hide any holes.

Thanks I will consider the Ral Partha one he is larger and will work better as a monster in SAGA AoM as the base is supposed to be at least 60mm in diameter. As for pinning I would need to drill in the centre of the wings very close to the repair and that might likely cause the wing to break off again. The underside of the wings and areas they cover will be difficult to spray prime and paint if glued on first?

I was thinking of pinning both halves to the body but if it is now solid after the gluing I guess that will suffice. I didn’t have any issue with spraying and painting, but mine is on a smaller base that allowed easy access.

I guess there would be a better bond if the wings were glued before paint was applied.

For sure. I usually assemble before undercoating. Where that isn’t practical, I would scrap off any paint from surfaces to be glued later.

Thanks, I am doing something similar, putting a small bit of putty over the join areas so it will still be bare metal after priming. What colours did you use on the Jabberwock?

For the skin I used Loren Forest, Warboss Green and Elysian Green, plus Athonian Camoshade. The wings are Xereus Purple and Daemonette Hide, also mixed with a bit of white. Shaded with Druchii Violet.

Thanks, it certainly worked well.

Cheers. Not sure yet whether I’ll paint the Ral Partha figure the same way. In any case, it is not in my current paint queue.

I as able to find most of those colours other than Athonian Camoshade, It looks to be a dark olive shade /wash? Do you have the old Citadel name for it or an equivalent?
LikeLike
It’s the first shade of that colour I’ve used, so I don’t know whether there was an earlier Citadel version I’m afraid. Dark olive sounds about right, I assume other paint ranges would have something similar.
